Reflective Writing
This assignment required me to interview someone who is culturally different from myself in multiple dimensions. I chose to interview on of my really good friend's Mom. She was born and raised in Venezuela. So I was expecting to hear about the culture of Venezuela, but to my surprize I found out that her family was originally from Italy. I chose to Interview her because I want to learn more about my friends culture and to better understand their custioms. I learned that its defienitly not easy moving to another country. She had studied the English language so the there was no language barrier for her, but the rest of her family knew little to none and it became very difficult for her to adjust to helping her family over come the language barrier. She found it difficult at first to find work here in America and even more difficult for her husband. A huge shock for her was the practice of her religion was almost imposiable due to the fact that she lived in a area that had one dominate religion. I learned so much about their tradtions and hoildays. I also learned about what family ment to them and how important it was to always keep to the family. This assignment really just opened my eyes to the cultures that we have in our world. This assignment didn't really chanllenge any of my assumptions because I didn't have many in the first place. One thing this assignment did show me is that not everyone views cultures the same way another person would. Some view some cultures as the same as other cultures basied on their race or ethnicity. I learned that I have to accept that not every views the world as openly as I do.
